A useful press release reduces the editor’s workload. Lead with the development, not a ceremonial preamble. In the first two paragraphs, state what happened, who is affected, where and when it happened, and why it matters now.
Use a precise subject line and a headline that can survive outside your organisation. Replace adjectives such as “groundbreaking” with evidence. Put the strongest local fact near the top, spell out acronyms on first use and give numbers enough context to be meaningful. Quotes should add judgement or consequence, not repeat the headline.
Provide a named media contact, a working phone number, image captions and links to supporting documents. If a release contains a regulated or technical claim, cite the primary source. Before sending, read the copy as a radio producer, business reporter and online editor: each needs a clear angle and facts that can be checked quickly.
PR Compass checklist: one news point; one audience; one credible proof point; one human consequence; one clear contact.
Editorial note: Practitioner guide; examples should be tested with Ghanaian editors before publication.
